The Belgian Neo-Impressionist Lemmen proves not only to bring out a decorative composition but to melt the scenic design impressively with color, surface and form.

The subtly drawn forms of the face and hat contrast with the color of the white blouse and reveal the almost translucent fabric which lets the skin of the girl shine through.

Compared with all previously published portraits by Lemmen, the work represented here is undoubtedly one of the most outstanding.

Georges Lemmen was born in 1865 in Schaerbeek the son of an architect.

He briefly studied at the art school in St. Josse-ten-Noode.

In the early 1880s he was influenced by Degas and Toulouse-Lautrec.

Starting in 1888 the artist participated in the avant-garde group "Les Vingt" in Brussels.

The group, among which Theo van Rysselberghe was active, developed contacts with Seurat and Signac and started participating in exhibitions in Brussels and Paris.

After a few years working in pointillist style, he combined this technique with his own; increasingly using self-developed brush techniques, which formed its own unique style of painting.

1913 was his most successful year. His solo exhibition at the Georges Giroux Gallery in Brussels was so successful that he began to build a stately home in Uccle, to which he moved in 1915.
The following year, 1916, the artist died suddenly at only 50 years of age.

His extensive oeuvre includes not only oil painting but numerous book illustrations, posters, ceramics, carpets, drawings, pastels and gouaches.
